  • REFERENCES

Bacteriostatic Water for Injection (BWFI) is a sterile, non-pyrogenic water preparation containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a bacteriostatic preservative. It is intended for use as a solvent or diluent for reconstituting lyophilized peptides, proteins, and other injectable pharmaceuticals prior to administration in a research or laboratory setting.

Composition

  • Water for Injection (WFI): USP grade, sterile, non-pyrogenic
  • Benzyl Alcohol: 0.9% (9 mg/mL) as an antimicrobial preservative

Properties & Mechanism

  • Sterility: Processed to USP standards to ensure sterility and absence of pyrogens
  • Preservative Function: Benzyl alcohol provides bacteriostatic action by inhibiting microbial growth, allowing safe multiple withdrawals from a single vial
  • Solubility: Compatible with a wide range of lyophilized peptides and proteins for dissolution and preparation of research solutions

Applications

  • Reconstitution of lyophilized peptides and proteins into injectable solutions
  • Solvent medium for sterile preparations in preclinical and research use
  • Designed for single-patient, multiple-use vials, with benzyl alcohol extending usability

Safety Profile

  • For research use only — not for direct clinical administration unless specifically prepared for human use under regulated standards
  • Benzyl alcohol should not be used in newborns or premature infants due to risk of “gasping syndrome” in clinical settings
  • Solutions must be used under sterile conditions to maintain integrity

Summary

Bacteriostatic Water for Injection is a sterile aqueous diluent containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a preservative. It is widely used in peptide research for reconstitution and dilution, ensuring sterility and extended usability of multi-dose vials.

Store Bacteriostatic Water for Injection at 20–25 °C (68–77 °F), protected from light and contamination. Do not freeze. Once opened, vials are intended for multiple withdrawals under aseptic conditions and should be discarded within 28 days of initial use, in accordance with USP standards.
